Why is it sometimes difficult to communicate with Land Rover Freelander systems?

We have found that the diagnostic mode on a Freelander can often prevent communications if the vehicle has been left un-locked for a certain length of time. We would always advise locking the vehicle using the remote 'plip' and leaving for a couple of minutes before re-attempting communication.
